STD Statistics in Orlando, FL

The latest STD statistics illustrate a stark increase in the number of STDs reported each year by Orlando and the surrounding Orange County area.  Health officials were not surprised by the rise in chlamydia and gonorrhea but they were not expecting the increase of syphilis cases.

To their surprise, city health officials discovered that the increase was not confined to 18 to 25 year olds were are the most likely to contract a STD.  With old people staying sexually active longer and young people having sex earlier, seniors and teens also saw an increase in reported cases.  Disappointingly, as the numbers show that incidence rates of sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise, residents that are being tested regularly is not.

  • From 2009 to 2011 there were 23,714 reported cases of STDs.
  • It is estimated that during the 3 year period (2009-2011) 688.3 out of 100,000 residents tested positive for an STD.
  • Chlamydia infections increased 71 percent from 2005-2009 among senior citizens.
  • Was ranked 8th out of 25 U.S. cities for its high rate of HIV/AIDS.

STD Testing and Sexual Education

The state of Florida has chosen an abstinence only curriculum and with over 8,000 positive STD test in 2014, Orlando city health officials are questioning the effectiveness of this program.

While the abstinence only method does help some students, it does not help to teach students the dangers of unprotected sex or educate them on safer ways to engage in sexual activities.  This stark oversight is contributing to the rise in both teenage and senior incidence rates.

The senior population is experiencing an unprecedented rise in positive chlamydia and gonorrhea tests.  Many seniors mistakenly believe that they are not really at risk this late in their life, a misnomer that the city’s sexual education programs are not addressing.  With more retirees entering Orange County every year, this statistics will probably only get worse.

Possibly the most alarming aspect of the sexual education classes is that teenagers are not learning the dangers associated with unprotected intercourse.  They miss the fact that some STDs like herpes can be spread through casual contact, creating the necessity to get tested routinely.  Herpes testing in Orlando as well as HIV testing in Orlando should be commonplace since both of these can be asymptomatic to unsuspecting infected persons.

STD Testing and Demographics

There is a strong correlation between STD rates and demographics in Orlando for its senior population as much as its tourists.  With the transient and sub-tropical climate, practicing safe sex can get pushed out of your consciousness, but health officials continue to try and impart the need for routine testing.

It is speculated that the continuous inflow of visitors for Disney, Sea World and the convention center is only adding to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.  Also, the seniors are a product of the 1960s and “free love” that was so popular then.  These same seniors were before widespread sexual education classes so their is a strong possibility that ignorance of the risk of contracting a STD.

City officials only expect the senior population STD rates to increase because they expect more and more seniors to migrate to the warm weather that Orlando offers as well as longer and healthier living due to advances in medical technology.  They can only hope part of the medical advances include stressing the importance that all populations get tested regularly.

Young people are always at a risk with several compounding factors that increase the rise in STDs.  One of the primary factors is the lack of education along with the fear of admitting that they are sexually active.  Other factors include the having the financial ability to maintain routine STD testing.

STD Testing for Better Sexual Health

A destination city known for its attractions and amusement parks, but the Florida city is hiding their increasing rates of STDs.  Before taking in the sights of downtown Disney, remember to check-up on your sexual health.  By ordering online, you can avoid lines all while getting a private, confidential STD testing at your local lab.  With just a 7 minute lab visit that will only require a small blood and/or urine sample, you will have plenty of time and energy to enjoy all aspects of your favorite Orlando attraction.
