El Paso health officials say that the region has a younger population which tends to be more sexually active and the recruits at the Fort Bliss Army post tend to go looking for love in all the wrong places.
Just in 2013 El Paso saw a 50% increase in syphilis cases and according to Texas health officials: “There are some public health challenges for El Paso,” he said, explaining that there is a, “very transient community, a big college with students who are [sexually] active, a lot of soldiers, and a lot of border crossers every day.” El Paso’s proximity to an international border puts residents at a higher risk of spreading and catching diseases of any kind, Resendes said. He said that’s the case worldwide where countries share borders and movement between those borders is relatively fluid.”
Fort Bliss Affect on El Paso STD rates
Fort Bliss had the highest rate of HIV cases per 10,000 soldiers in 2013. This revelation is not only important in accessing the HIV threat to El Paso residents but all STIs because they are all spread via the same sexual health practices. In 2012, there were 784 soldiers from Fort Bliss that were diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in addition to HIV.
According to Maj. Gen. Dana Pittard: “There are a number of commonalities among our Soldiers who have been affected,” wrote Pittard. “All of our recent cases have been a result of men having unprotected sex with men. African-American and Latino Soldiers were affected disproportionately in far greater numbers. The majority of our HIV cases resulted from online solicitations for sex, particularly from the websites Craigslist, Grinder, and Adam for Adam.”
